Don’t ignore the Aberdeen/Leicester double for much longer

Both north and south of the border, football’s natural order is under threat and that is brilliant news for the beautiful game and potentially for punters daring to believe.

Early in February, Aberdeen’s second Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership victory over Celtic this season has ensured the Dons hang off the reigning champions’ coattails by just three points, with the same number of games played.

Meanwhile, Leicester City’s midweek win over Liverpool saw the Foxes’ improbable Premier League charge continue, leaving Manchester City trailing by three points.

A false dawn for the Dons last season was characterised by their Celtic complex, where they were defeated four times buy the Hoops and saw a four-point lead in January slip away to a 17-point deficit by May.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is well within his rights to play down premature and distracting title talk, but Celtic have arguably never looked more vulnerable in a Premiership campaign, which offers great hope to last season’s runners-up.

Ronny Deila has often been forced to fend off criticism this term and in a week where Ross County shocked them in the League Cup as well, the Norwegian is having to fight his corner once again.

Following the latest loss, there will be more than a couple of nervous glances at the standings by fans of the Glasgow giants.

Three away games on the spin for McInnes’ men are sure to test the mettle of their Celtic pursuit, but 8/1 on the title could shrink if they pass these examinations and their rivals continue to falter.

Meanwhile, Leicester continue to stick two fingers up to the establishment down south, but while many viewed Claudio Ranieri’s mob as nothing more than teenage renegades as the autumn unfolded, as spring approaches they look to have matured in rapid time.

The Midlands outfit were top at Christmas – the position held by five of the last six Premier League champions – and now they are making sides like Liverpool look ordinary, their price for the big one continues to shrink.

Spurred on by the prolific Jamie Vardy, the Foxes face a show-stopping fixture against City next and should they beat them, then 9/2 on the biggest title shock of all time, suddenly becomes something altogether less juicy.

The Aberdeen/Leicester division-winning double currently pays out at just shy of 50/1 at Ladbrokes.
