Benik Afobe: I could have scored goals at Arsenal

Published:

Benik Afobe spent 14 years at Arsenal without once being given a chance to show what he can do for the first team.

However, after loan spells with Huddersfield, Reading, Bolton, Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and a permanent stint at Wolves, the 22-year-old will finally get a chance to show Arsene Wenger what he is missing.

Afobe has scored in each of his last three games since signing for Bournemouth and how Wenger would have liked him in the side that recently struggled to a 0-0 draw with Southampton.

The Cherries hitman is fully confident that he would have scored goals for the Gunners if given the chance but the England U21 man is adamant he has nothing to prove.

“I have always been confident and believed in myself. If you don’t as a forward, you’re not going to score goals. I have nothing to prove to Arsenal. It was their decision to sell me and I have moved on,” he told the Bournemouth Echo.

“I am here in the Premier League now, scoring winners. I am enjoying it and just want to keep improving.”

Arsenal were 2-0 winners last time the sides met but having lost just one of their last seven games Eddie Howe’s men will be confident of pulling off a shock at Dean Court this weekend.

The hosts go into the game as 11/4 underdogs, with the Gunners on at even money and the draw available at 23/10.

And, while Arsenal stars Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez head the betting in the first goalscorer market at 9/2 and 6/1 respectively, it is the red hot Afobe who could appeal most at 13/2.
