BDO World Champ Trina Gulliver named Ladbrokes’ Master at Work

Trina Gulliver, who last month starred on the Lakeside stage to claim her 10th BDO World Darts Championship has been named Ladbrokes’ Master at Work for January.
It was ‘Golden Girl’s 12th appearance in a final at Frimley Green since the Women’s Championship began in 2000, highlighting her domination of the division.
“It was absolutely brilliant to get into double figures. Once is amazing, but to win it 10 times is even better,” she told Ladbrokes News.
“I thought getting to double figures had eluded me after five years, so it lifted a lot of stress off my shoulders.”
Following her success in 2011, Gulliver made just two Lakeside finals, losing both in what was an extremely tough period for the 46-year-old.
“I had some traumatic family issues during those five years in between titles, for example losing my mum in 2012 who was undoubtedly my biggest fan as well as other family members, so it hard been a really tough five years.”
“While I hadn’t been right at the top over that period I was never far away. You don’t lose it overnight, it’s just that I had to prioritise things when other issues came into my life.
“Although darts is my living and I don’t want to degrade it, there’s a fine balance you need to strike and you just have to be there for family.”
The bright lights of the Lakeside stage have seen Gulliver come out on top more times than her fellow players put together since the turn of the century, and it holds a special place for her.
“I love Lakeside, always have, always will. It’s an amazing atmosphere that you can see on TV, but when you are there it is multiplied by ten-fold. If anyone gets the chance they must go.”
Improving upon her proud record is an increasingly tough task, an issue Gulliver was quick to acknowledge when discussing the challenge posed by a crop of new faces.
“We have a lot of talent out there at the moment who have proved hard to beat at times.
“You’ve got the likes of Fallon Sherrock, Aileen De Graaf, Casey Gallagher and Zoe Jones, so there are some good young players coming through who are making it tough for the likes of myself and Deta [Hedman] and Lisa [Ashton] who are perhaps on the elder end of the scale”
As for how long she can keep going, last month’s Master at Work is making no firm targets, but you can rest assured she will be there in Frimley Green next January searching for an 11th title.
“I’m just going to keep on going as long as I can. Obviously I will be there next year to defend my title and hopefully I can keep my form up for as long as possible.”
