Winter revival gives East Stirling survival hope

Published:

Back in early October things looked pretty bleak for East Stirling, who had lost seven of their opening nine games of the Ladbrokes League 2 campaign.

A 2-1 loss away at Berwick Rangers on October 3 was the Shire’s sixth league loss in succession, and they were an ominous 2/7 with Ladbrokes to go down.

Fast forward a few months however, and while Craig Tully’s side may still be propping up the Ladbrokes SPFL, the club have given themselves a real chance of survival.

Two weeks after that Berwick loss East Stirling won 2-0 at home to current table-toppers Elgin City, kicking off a run which has seen the Ochilview side win five and draw one of their last ten fixtures.

The winter played its part in causing a few postponements, and though they do still sit bottom, the men in black and white have games in hand on the clubs above.

The upturn in form is reflected in the latest odds for Stirling to finish bottom of 6/5.

Those odds will grow again should Tully’s outfit win at home to East Fife this weekend, and their record at Ochilview Park will give them every confidence.

The bottom side have six wins from nine home games this term, and only league leaders Elgin can boast more victories on home soil.

The hosts are 21/20 for three points this weekend, with visitors East Fife 10/11.

Only a pre-Christmas blip when welcoming Berwick has prevented East Stirling from winning all of their last five home games, and they came out victors on the opening day too when East Fife made their most recent visit.

The way Tully and his team are going, they won’t be propping up the league for long.
