Who is… Everton’s new hotshot striker Shani Tarashaj?

Published:

Everton possess some of the Premier League’s most sought-after youngsters, boasting John Stones, Ross Barkley, Romelu Lukaku and Gerard Deulafeu among their roster, but Roberto Martinez has snapped up another of Europe’s finest young talents.

The Toffees manager has moved to seal the signature of Shani Tarashaj from Swiss club Grasshoppers, for a reported £3m fee.

Tarashaj has been courted by a host of clubs during the season, but the 20-year-old striker has made Goodison Park his next destination.

The Swiss U21 international will be loaned back to Grasshoppers for the remainder of the campaign, where he has netted eight times in 18 Swiss Super League appearances.

Everton’s new man came through the youth ranks at Grasshoppers, making his league debut in August 2014.

A flying start to this campaign caught the eye of a host of clubs however, with Tarashaj netting four times in the opening five games.

Everton’s appeal to a young player need only be noted with the fact that five players under 25 at Goodison Park have made 14 or more league appearances this term, emphasising Roberto Martinez’s belief in youth.

It may be a couple of years yet before the Goodison faithful see just how good Tarashaj can become, but Martinez has seen something in the Swiss forward, and if Barkley, Lukaku and the rest are anything to go by, the Spaniard’s judgment of ability isn’t too shabby at all.
