West Ham set to end Liverpool resurgence

Liverpool are on a high after winning back-to-back games over the festive period, with struggling Sunderland and overachieving Leicester City both despatched 1-0.

However, they will come crashing back to earth when they face West Ham United on New Year’s Day.

The Hammers have shown themselves to be difficult opponents for the Reds, with two of the last three meetings between the pair ending with three points for the Londoners.

Earlier in the season, Slaven Bilic’s men triumphed at Anfield and seeing his side doing the double comes in at 14/5.

Interestingly, in their last two victories against Liverpool, West Ham have put three goals past the Merseysiders.

Clearly Andy Carroll and company have found the secret to unlocking Simon Mignolet’s net and can be backed at 10/1 to be the first team to get to three goals.

Putting money on the Hammers hadn’t been a good bet for two months, with the club failing to pick up a win since they overcame Chelsea at the end of October.

However, they triumphed 2-1 over Southampton in their last match and that boost in form and confidence will be enough to get them past a team they have a strong record against.

The game will be made even more difficult for Jurgen Klopp’s men as Dimitri Payet is set to make his return against the Reds.

Payet has been out since the start of November when he was injured against Liverpool’s cross-city rivals Everton.

Before that, the 28-year-old had been one of the leading stars of the top-flight season and had found the net five times, making him the perfect person to back in Ladbrokes’ *double odds first goalscorer promotion.

Two of those strikes were the opening goal of the contest and backing him to do so again is priced at 9/1.
