Watford odds-on to land forgotten Tottenham man in January

Andros Townsend is odds-on to be a Watford player by the time the January transfer window shuts according to Ladbrokes’ latest odds.

The out-of-favour Tottenham winger has not featured for his current club since their Europa League defeat against Anderlecht in late October, and it appears Vicarage Road could be his salvation.

The bookmakers make it an 8/15 chance that the England international makes the short hop to Hertfordshire in the next month in a bid to revive his season as well as his Euro 2016 hopes.

Just seven appearances in all competitions this season could mean that Townsend’s hopes of making Roy Hodgson’s squad for the tournament in France begin to wane and a move mid-way through the season could be the required solution.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reported to be holding out for a fee of £14m for the wide man, but while he drives a notoriously hard bargain, he could be forced to lower his valuation if he is to ship the player off.

Any move for the player would more than likely break Watford’s transfer record for a player, currently standing at the £6.6m that they paid for Etienne Capoue in summer, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Pozzo family happy to splash the cash again.

Back then, many had predicted Quique Sanchez Flores’ men were in for a season battling relegation, but thanks in part to the strike partnership of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney, the side find themselves in ninth place in the table.

So with safety looking more assured by the day, starting to build for next season could be on the forefront of the mind for the Spaniard in charge, and extra funds could be made available by the club’s owners.

A move for the 24-year-old would certainly add some relative youthfulness into the team’s midfield, with Capoue their youngest regular midfielder at 27-years-old.

If a reunion is to be on the cards for the past and present Lilywhites players, Watford will need to move fast.

There is thought to be plenty of interest in Townsend with the likes of West Brom (4/1) and Newcastle (8/1) in the market for reinforcements, but according to the betting, it is the Hornets who sit in the driving seat.
