We may be in the midst a golden era of goalkeepers in the Premier League, but the battle for the number one spot is somewhat of a walkover.
After the trio of David De Gea, Petr Cech and Jack Butland put in show-stopping performances for their respective teams on Sunday, we put the question of which stopper is the best in the English top-flight to our readers.
The voters were clear from the outset as the Manchester United man steam-rolled the opposition with a huge 84 per cent of the vote.
The Spaniard has been attracting admiring glances from the likes of Real Madrid in the past 12 months, and after the weekend’s efforts against Liverpool it is easy to see why.
The 25-year-old pulled off a string of fantastic saves to ensure the Red Devils ran out 1-0 victors at Anfield.
There wasn’t a huge amount between the remaining quartet in our poll, but Hugo Lloris was the man to pick up the silver medal.
The Tottenham keeper attracted eight per cent of the vote ahead of Petr Cech and Jack Butland with four per cent.
The latter could be hoping to challenge for England’s number one jersey in the summer, having put in a number of splendid performances for Stoke this season.
Mark Hughes’ faith in Butland with the gloves for the Potters has seen the former Birmingham City man flourish between the sticks.
He outscored his rival for the England jersey and the current Three Lions stopper Joe Hart by virtue of the fact that the Manchester City man failed to attract a single vote.
While his shot stopping capabilities are beyond doubt, the tendency for the odd error here and there may have seen the 28-year-old slip down the pecking order of our poll.
It will be pleasant reading for the red half of Manchester to see the Citizens man at the bottom of our quintet, but it will be even more enjoyable for them to see De Gea rated as the Premier League’s best.
