Poll: Who should Manchester United line up to succeed LVG?

Published:

It may have been music to the ears of some sections of the Manchester United faithful, while for others the news that Louis van Gaal is pondering stepping down in the summer is just another bump in the road at Old Trafford.

Should the Dutchman step down at the end of the campaign, as is being reported by The Mirror, the race for the United hierarchy would be on to secure the successor to take the club back to the top.

Jose Mourinho (11/10) has been mooted as the next man in the hotseat at the Theatre of Dreams, with the Portuguese out of work since leaving Chelsea in December.

Other big names in the world of football have been linked with a move to the north west should LVG depart the club too.

Pep Guardiola’s (8/1) admission that he is leaving Bayern Munich in the summer to pursue a career in the Premier League has got many tongues wagging about his potential destination.

Manchester City are the hot favourites to land the former Barcelona boss, but would the club replace Manuel Pellegrini if the Citizens won the title?

There looks little chance of the red half of Manchester celebrating another Premier League success this term, so the lure of Pep might see the club’s owners pounce in the summer.

With Atletico Madrid set to be stuck under a transfer embargo after this window it may be that Diego Simeone (16/1) would be interested in a way out of the Spanish capital, with United potential suitors.

According to Ladbrokes Fabio Capello is also a runner at 14/1. The Italian was most recently in charge of the Russian national team, but with club honours that include five Serie A titles, two La Ligas, one Champions League  and one European Super Cup, he might be a tempting proposition.

But what if LVG’s successor has been at the club all along?

The man himself has spoken of how Ryan Giggs (2/1) will follow him in the Old Trafford dug-out, but will it be this soon?

The United legend will have a task on his hands in his first permanent role in the world of management, but with the regard he is held within by the fans, he might just get the benefit of the doubt.

For now though, we are putting it to you. Who should succeed Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager when he departs the role, whenever that may be? Vote now in today’s poll…
