Many will have been left scratching their heads at Roberto Martinez’s comments when he hailed Gareth Barry as ‘one of the best English players ever’ on Wednesday night, but it certainly opens up a new debate in regards to the Three Lions squad.
The words of the Everton boss may be a tad over the top, but there was no denying that the 34-year-old certainly put in an excellent performance in the centre of the park in the Toffees League Cup victory over Manchester City.
It’s been four years since Barry donned an England shirt, and he hasn’t represented his country at a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup, but should things change?
The former Aston Villa midfielder has been a mainstay at the heart of the Everton team this season, and would certainly offer an experienced head in a rather youthful England side.
With the likes of Jack Wilshere and fellow senior midfield option Michael Carrick often on the treatment table, the evergreen Barry does hold that advantage.
In fact, he hasn’t failed to play at least 30 Premier League games in a season since the 2001-02 campaign.
That sort of longevity could see Roy Hodgson reward his sterling performances this term with one last chance to shine on the big stage with his country.
