Newcastle v Man United: Magpies to lose 1-0 yet again

Published:

Things may be bleak for Manchester United at present but Red Devils fans will be given a dose of perspective when they travel to St James’ Park this week.

The Red Devils have gained plenty of column inches for their lacklustre displays this season but go into this tie unbeaten in three and having won their last two games.

Not the sort of form that is going to relieve the pressure on Louis van Gaal but far better that that of Newcastle who come into the tie having not won in five games and losing their last four without scoring a single goal.

In fact Steve McClaren’s men have lost their last four games 1-0 and with the visitors resolute in defence but struggling for goals another 1-0 defeat could be the best bet at 5/1.

However, for those expecting the Magpies to end their goalless run the Ladbrokes price boost, which sees a Manchester United win with both teams scoring enhanced from 11/4 to 7/2 could also tempt.

As for who is going to score for the Red Devils look no further than Wayne Rooney.

The United talisman has now scored in back-to-back games having added to his stunning winner over Swansea with a well taken penalty in the FA Cup victory over Sheffield United.

Rooney has netted 12 times against Newcastle in the past, only scoring more against Fulham, Arsenal and Aston Villa, and at 9/2 to net the opener is certainly worth backing, especially with the game being screened live on BT Sport.

With the game being on TV Ladbrokes will double the odds on any winning first goalscorer selection if the opener is scored inside the first 25 minutes, making Rooney a potential 9/1 shot.

Both United managers are in hot water at present but after Tuesday’s tea-time tie at St James’ Van Gaal will likely be simmering as McClaren reaches boiling point.
