Motherwell boss cites hard work after manager of the month award

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee scooped the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership Manager of the Month award for December having picked up maximum points, ensuring the table looks far rosier for Well heading into 2016.
Coming off an inconsistent run in November, McGhee’s side began the festive month in fine fashion with a 3-1 home triumph over Dundee, paving the way for a stunning victory at Celtic, before high-flying St Johnstone were also toppled to make it three wins on the spin.
Having begun 2016 with a 3-3 draw against Hamilton at Fir Park, Motherwell enter the Scottish Cup weekend in eighth place, on 25 points, and have drifted way out to 25/1 to be the top flight’s bottom club at the end of the season.
On receiving his award, McGhee had a simple answer as to how it had been won.
He said: “Hard work, the lads have trained hard, the tempo of training and the intensity of training has been great and that’s manifested itself on the pitch as great performances.
“It’s as simple as that really; hard work.”
Despite acknowledging the recent success of his team in edging away from danger, McGhee was also quick to reiterate that securing 40 points was still the minimum mark for safety, so resting on laurels was not an option.
“We all know it’s a precarious league, lose a couple of games and you slip back down, so we’re not getting complacent,” said the 58-year-old.
“We are not going to take our foot off the pedal, we are going to keep pressing on. “We want to win this award again in January.”
Motherwell entertain Highland League outfit Cove Rangers next in their first Scottish Cup outing of the season, and given their recent good form, it’s 37/20 the Premiership club prevail with a three-goal handicap.
