Manchester United put on red alert over coveted striker

Manchester United’s search for attacking fire power has taken an unexpected twist with PSG forward Edinson Cavani now seemingly available.

United are reported to have held a long-term interest in the Uruguayan but talk of a move has cooled in recent months.

However, former Old Trafford defender and current PSG manager Laurent Blanc has put United boss Louis van Gaal on red alert with his recent comments regarding the 28-year-old, calling the striker’s professionalism into question.

“There is a problem with Cavani’s behaviour but my job is to think of the entire squad as a collective,” Blanc recently explained.

“The desires of the individual can’t affect the rest of the team. I believe that he can score here but I understand if he wants to consider other career opportunities.”

While petulance in the dressing room is not a virtue many United fans, or indeed Van Gaal, would welcome Cavani’s complaints are somewhat justified.

The forward has netted 13 goals from 24 appearances for PSG this term but is continually overlooked or played out of position by Blanc.

United will face stiff competition from Premier League leaders Arsenal for Cavani’s signature, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger hoping to land the Ligue 1 star as a replacement for the injured Danny Welbeck.

However, United will hope that Blanc’s ties to the club will put them in pole position as Van Gaal ups the ante in his search for a top four finish.

Ironically, Blanc has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford with many predicting Van Gaal will be given his marching orders if United lose to bitter rivals Liverpool this weekend.

Should the Frenchman return to the north-west any chance of Cavani joining United would seemingly die, but beat Liverpool and Van Gaal could just keep his job and land his man.
