Liverpool preparing to spend big on in-form Leicester star

Liverpool’s recent track record of buying strikers isn’t the best. Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are two success stories from the club’s recent history of goalscorers, but alongside that pair stand countless other duds.
Andy Carroll, Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli are just three that spring immediately to mind, while the jury remains out on Christian Benteke’s status at Anfield.
After so many failures to find reliable frontmen, it will come as little surprise to see that the club are reportedly back in the hunt for another.
The man they seek, according to fountain of football transfer knowledge the Daily Star, is Leicester’s flavour of the season, Jamie Vardy.
After the campaign the rags-to-riches striker has compiled this term, being linked with a raft of bigger clubs was a certainty.
However, despite suggestions that giants like Manchester United and Real Madrid were monitoring the England international, no story had emerged detailing a concrete bid.
That could all be about to change though, as the Star say that Liverpool are prepared to offer £25m for the former Fleetwood Town star in the summer.
On the back of half a season of success, that price tag seems more than weighty enough; however, the Foxes are likely to want far more than that to part with their star man.
Vardy famously set a new Premier League record when scoring in 11 consecutive matches and the striker is the joint-leading scorer in the division on the back of those exploits, sharing the honour with Romelu Lukaku on 15 goals.
As a result, his importance to Leicester’s future has risen rapidly and the likelihood of letting him go for anything less than £30m looks slim.
Whether the player himself even wants to depart the King Power Stadium remains to be seen. After all, the Foxes are in a better position to qualify for next season’s Champions League than Liverpool and are still well in the title challenge too.
Ladbrokes offer 8/15 about Claudio Ranieri’s men finishing inside the top four, compared to 12/5 on Liverpool, while Leicester are 16/1 for the league despite sitting on top of the table.
