Liverpool and Stoke set to miss out on Capital One Cup glory

Published:

While Liverpool against Stoke should be a cracking encounter in the Capital One Cup tonight, neither will be going on to lift the trophy at Wembley at the end of February.

That is the conclusion of the Ladbrokes News poll for the day which asked readers to name their winner of the season’s first major silverware.

There wasn’t a lot between the four sides, but for whoever wins out between the Potters and the Reds, it will be a supporting role for them under the famous arch.

The former attracted 18 per cent of today’s vote, while Jurgen Klopp’s men gained 23 per cent.

Neither were able to usurp the pair of Manchester City (32 per cent) and Everton (27 per cent) in our poll, with the Citizen’s just getting the nod to lift the trophy.

Winning the League Cup for the second time in three seasons would certainly go some way to quietening the talk of an Etihad exit for manager Manuel Pellegrini, who has seen Pep Guardiola’s recent comments place his job under some scrutiny.

Ladbrokes make it an 11/10 shot that the majority of readers are right and the Chilean can go some way to convincing the hierarchy at the City of Manchester Stadium that he is the man to take them forward.

The fact that more people tipped Everton for glory than either their neighbours from Stanley Park or Stoke City could suggest that the 13/2 about them winning the cup is a spot of value.

Nevertheless, they will have to overcome the tournament jollies, who have a bigger squad to rely on during a busy period that will have taken its toll on bodies.

City may have lost to both Stoke and Liverpool in the past two months, but the votes suggest that get past Everton, and the trophy will be as good as theirs.
