It’s official: Simon Mignolet is not good enough to play for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has made his first major mistake as Liverpool boss by handing error-prone goalkeeper Simon Mignolet a new five-year deal at Anfield.
That is according to the latest poll by Ladbrokes News which asked readers to vote on the simple question of whether or not the Belgium stopper is good enough to play for the Reds.
And with an overwhelming 91 per cent of voters saying no it is clear there is little confidence in the former Sunderland man to shake off his current run of poor form.
The timing of the new deal has left many Liverpool fans scratching their heads, with the new contract being announced within days of the ‘keeper being embarrassingly beaten at his near post twice in the 3-3 draw with Arsenal.
However, the motto ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ clearly still holds water with some of the Anfield faithful, with nine per cent of voters of the opinion that Mignolet is good enough to be a Red.
Whether that is an endorsement of the Belgian’s ability or a realisation that Liverpool are now firmly behind the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United in English football’s pecking order is a debate for another day.
However, few people would disagree that Thibaut Courtois, Joe Hart, Petr Cech and David de Gea are all better than Mignolet so the latter could be the better explanation.
Liverpool are next in action in the FA Cup third round replay against Exeter and the Reds are 10/11 to keep a clean sheet.
Whether this is as a result of Exeter being a League Two side or the fact that Mignolet may be replaced in goal – only time will tell.
