Gulf between Hamilton and Hearts shows need for draft

Talk emerged this week that the SPFL were looking into the possibility of bringing in a draft system similar to what is used in American sports.
This would allow the teams in the Ladbrokes Premiership that have finished lower in the league to get first pick in bringing in some young talent.
At first, this seems like an odd proposal, but if you examine the state of Scottish football in recent years, you can see why such a move would make sense.
Indeed, the upcoming clash between Hamilton and Hearts will be a great example as to why such a system would be beneficial to the game as a whole.
The Accies lost their last game 8-1 to a rampant Celtic side and these types of results shouldn’t occur in a league with only 12 teams.

Something needs to be done to close the gap between top and bottom in Scotland and a draft would help do that.
Furthermore, Celtic have now won the league four times in a row, with their combined winning margin now an astonishing 82 points.
Clearly, more competition is needed in Scotland and, before fans of the champions begin to feel aggrieved, it would also be helpful for the Bhoys.
The Glasgow club have only made it past the Champions League group stage once since 2008.
Having to deal with more difficult opposition domestically would force Celtic to strengthen and this would improve their European chances.
