Guardiola taking over Man City spells bad news for Liverpool

Published:

Pep Guardiola is going to be a Premier League manager next season. The club he is going to take charge of as yet remains unknown, but the smart money is on Manchester City.

If those rumours are enough to send the gossip mongers in to an excited frenzy, then the potential new signings the Spaniard might make at the Etihad are propelling them into overdrive.

The latest musings suggest the former Barcelona guru has Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan at the top of his shopping list for when he touches down on these shores, which is particularly bad news for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.

The new Reds manager worked with Gundogan during his time as BVB coach and had earmarked the German marauder as a potential new arrival to Anfield in the summer.

However, it seems Guardiola is also sweet on the idea of landing the 25-year-old, with the Sunday Express reporting that the Bayern boss has told City to make the 16-cap international his first signing.

The Express also suggest that Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte is on Guardiola’s wishlist, who the paper suggests has a £37m release clause that the Citizens could trigger.

Interest in Gundogan remains fervent though and the Express say Juventus have already been rebuffed by the Yellow and Black Bundesliga side over his availability this winter.

A bidding war in the summer looks the most likely scenario at the moment, one which City certainly have the cash to win and, quite likely, the added attraction of a Champions League-winning manager.

Current City boss Manuel Pellegrini has his charges three points off the pace in the pursuit of the Premier League title, with Ladbrokes making them 23/20 to win the trophy ahead of Guardiola’s expected arrival.
