Bournemouth set to hijack West Brom’s £8m winger bid

AFC Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has spent almost £20m already in the January transfer widow but the Cherries boss is not done yet.

According to reports the Dean Court gaffer is preparing to hijack West Brom’s £8m move for highly-rated QPR winger Matt Phillips.

Phillips, 24, started his career at Wycombe Wanderers, taking in spells at Blackpool and Sheffield United before arriving at Loftus Road but really burst on the scene when scoring this cracker against Crystal Palace in the Premier League last season…

Phillips has been an integral part of the Hoops’ season so far, playing 27 times and chipping in with four goals but with the west Londoners keen to slash their wage bill manager Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink is likely to listen to offers.

Howe has not been shy with the Cherries’ purse strings this month, snapping up Benik Afobe from Wolves for a reported £10m, bringing Lewis Grabban back to the Vitality Stadium from Norwich for £7m and paying over £1m to acquire Juan Iturbe on loan from Roma.

However, with Chelsea loanee Christian Atsu and one-time record signing Max Gradel missing practically the entire season through injury Howe is still in the market for wide men and believes Phillips can make waves in the top flight.

Bournemouth’s recent run of one loss in nine games was damaged last night with West Ham running out 3-1 winners on the south coast.

The Cherries will get a chance to put things right against Norwich on Saturday and go into that game as 17/20 favourites.
