Betting suggests little change is likely in the Bristol City dugout

After guiding Bristol City to a huge upset over Championship leaders Middlesbrough on Saturday, the chances of John Pemberton landing the permanent gig at Ashton Gate look even stronger.

The caretaker boss went into the fixture against Boro as a 16/1 chance to succeed Steve Cotterill in the West Country, but the victory at the weekend and subsequent money in support of the 51-year-old, saw him promoted to 4/1 second-favouritism.

He has already spoken of how he would like to stay in the role that has seen him move the Robins to touching distance of safety in the second tier on the back of one victory, adding further fuel to the fire.

Bristol “I’d consider becoming manager, if it’s in the club’s best interests,” he told the Bristol Post.

“This is a good club and given its infrastructure, it’s only going to go one way. To be a part of that would be fantastic.”

The Interim boss hasn’t taken the mantle at a senior club on a permanent basis, but will have certainly given City’s hierarchy plenty to think about after his most recent game in charge.

Next up is an FA Cup Third Round replay against West Brom, and as well as the Middlesbrough result, Pemberton has history of leading an upset in the competition.

Back in 2009 he took over at Nottingham Forest in the interim period before Billy Davies took charge at the City Ground.

The former Leeds United player oversaw one game for the East Midlands club, the small matter of a cup match against Manchester City.

Should he get the role, ‘Psycho’ would likely need to improve on the 31.25 win percentage he achieve in his last position in order to keep the Robins up.

However, with the betting swinging in the current caretaker’s favour, it looks as if the 53-year-old could find himself with competition for favouritism.
