A jolly Christmas puts Cowdenbeath in better shape

Published:

As Halloween approached last autumn, things were rather gloomy for Ladbrokes League 1 side Cowdenbeath, but how things have changed.

Cowden were just 7/4 to be relegated during the end of October, after starting the season with just two wins from their opening 10 league games.

However in the nine games since a 2-2 draw with Stenhousemuir on October 17, the Blue Brazil have turned it all around with five victories and a draw.

Three straight wins across Christmas was a fine run of results too for Colin Nish’s side, who are now long shots at 18/1 for the drop.

Their form was deservedly acknowledged too with in-form Greig Spence receiving the Ladbrokes League 1 Player of the Month Award for December.

Spence notched in five of Cowden’s eight goals in their unbeaten Christmas spell, and they continued that run into the New Year when only two questionable penalty decisions denied them a result against runaway league leaders Dunfermline.

The 2-1 loss at the only professional side in the division showed the huge improvement the club have made under Nish in his first managerial role.

Cowden met the Pars twice in the early weeks of the campaign, and the difference in quality of pre-season preparation afforded to both clubs was evident as Dunfermline scored 12 times.

Nish made clear his side just needed time and he’s been proven correct with the Blue Brazil now just four points off a promotion play-off place.

They’ll take another big step towards that top four if they can win at home to eighth-placed Stranraer this weekend, and Cowden’s home form suggests that can do just that.

The Central Park club are 23/20 favourites to claim a sixth home win from 10 games, while the visitors are 9/5 to inflict just a second home loss of the season on the ever-improving Cowden.
