Wolfsburg v Man United: Tough ask for Red Devils in Germany

Manchester United may have to pull off a form-reversing display in Germany if they are to progress to the knock-out stages of the Champions league.

The Red Devils need to equal the result of PSV, who are at home to bottom side CSKA Moscow, to ensure qualification but head to Germany having won just once in five games on the road in the competition.

By contrast, Wolfsburg have lost just one of their last five at home in Champions League action and will know that United have struggled in Germany in the past, winning five, drawing four and losing five of their previous visits.

However, a study of the history also suggests that United might just pull it off, with Wolfsburg losing each of their last seven meetings with English sides and United winning the last three meetings between the teams.

The Red Devils ran out 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture this year thanks to a Juan Mata penalty and a strike from Chris Smalling, while the previous two meetings – back in 2009 – saw United run out 3-1 and 2-1 winners.

The scorelines suggest that both sides will find the back of the net and this has not been lost on Ladbrokes who have boosted a United win with both sides scoring from 4/1 to 11/2.

However, with captain Wayne Rooney failing to overcome an ankle knock in time the visitors will have to look elsewhere for inspiration.

According to the odds Anthony Martial is the man most likely for United, with the French teen priced at 13/2 to open the scoring and 13/5 to score anytime.

And after netting the equaliser against CSKA in United last road trip there will be plenty of money staked on Old Trafford’s new star this time round.
