Nicholls’ animal finished almost 6l behind Colin Tizzard’s inmate at the same course in the build up to this race two years ago, only for Silviniaco Conti to reclaim superiority by 3½l a month later, and his Cheltenham Gold Cup blowout shouldn’t be seen as anything out of the ordinary.
Djakadam (16/1) and Road To Riches (20/1) both finished ahead of the Nicholls horse at the Festival in March, but the fact that both are so far behind in the betting for this, despite neither doing much wrong since, shows the wisdom of sticking with the defending champion.
Furthermore, with Don Cossack (9/4), Vautour (5/2) and Cue Card (7/2) scrapping it out for favouritism at the top of the market, you’ll feel the full benefit of Ladbrokes’ concession.
Silviniaco Conti might not be favourite, but he looks a fair bet for the three-timer at 13/2.
