Will Spurs’ top-four plans come unstuck against Norwich on Boxing Day?

Published:

Tottenham welcome Norwich to White Hart Lane as their Boxing Day guests looking to improve their recent Premier League record against their Norfolk-based rivals, in order to keep the coals of their top-four challenge burning brightly.

Spurs have only won one of their last five top-flight battles against the Canaries, with the yellow-shirted side claiming two wins over that stretch.

With top-four aspirations growing more realistic by the week in north London, Mauricio Pochettino will not want his men to slip on a Norwich-shaped banana skin over the Christmas period.

A 2-0 win down at St Mary’s against an out of sorts Southampton should have gone a long way to allaying those fears in the capital, but while the Lilywhites were getting the job done on the south coast, Norwich were up to arguably more impressive tricks of their own.

Alex Neil’s side grabbed a historic 2-1 win at Old Trafford for as they inadvertently turned the screw on beleaguered Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

Such heroics could breed some nervousness down at the Lane, as a bogey side roll into town intent on inflicting a second home loss in a row on Pochettino’s men, after Newcastle laid down the blueprint earlier in December.

Along with their own landmark result, that 2-1 Toon raid will give Norwich belief that they can play the role of crowd silencers once more.

Considering the disparity of the match odds, this theory might well end up rewarding the more adventurous punters generously.

Tottenham would appear nailed on for the points at 2/5, the draw offers plenty of attraction at 7/2, but 13/2 on Norwich escaping with the spoils is tantalising.

Norwich are still odds-against in the double chance market which may be more enticing if not as profitable if correct.
