TOP 5: When football celebrations go wrong…

Published:

Among the Europa League thrills and spills last night, there was a little incident which could be heading straight to the football bloopers DVD.

After netting the third and final goal in Sporting Lisbon’s 3-1 win over Besiktas, Teofilo Guittierez thought he would have a jolly by grabbing the referee’s vanishing spray as part of his goal celebration.

While not being the most memorable way to express his delight at scoring, it also got him in the referee’s notebook with a yellow card.

That incident got us at Ladbrokes News reminiscing over famous celebratory fails, and we’ve put together five of the best…

First up comes this maverick from the world of Italy’s amateur football.

After scoring one of the worst goals ever caught on camera, the delighted number nine swiftly wheels away.

Making a few headbutting suggestions as he runs to the touchline, he evades his congratulatory team and smashes his head through the dugout. We don’t know why.

The referee wasn’t impressed and booked the goalscoring hero. He probably had a headache the next morning too.

Next comes the sweet naivety of this delightful Zambian team.

Having tucked away a fine free-kick, the K-Stars (including the goalkeeper) go off to celebrate with a group of local school kids on the sidelines.

Unbeknown to them, the devilish referee and opponents Ferrovario have seemingly hatched a plan to restart the game rather quickly.

Faced with no goalkeeper and a handful of K-Stars, Ferrovario launch the ball into the net for a quick response.

It may be harsh to place this goal in a list of celebratory fails, but would Jose Mourinho or Sir Alex Ferguson allow such complacency on the pitch? Don’t think so.

Number three is this goalkeeping howler from, erm, well we aren’t quite sure where.

It’s penalty shootout time and the keeper thinks he’s produced the goods after rebounding the ball away from goal. He pats his chest, looks out to the crowd, job done. That penalty is definitely saved.

Except…

Our fourth entry is one to maybe avoid if you’re a little squeamish.

Paulo Diogo had a respectable career in the Swiss First Division, playing for FC Sion among others, but while celebrating after assiting a goal for former Birmingham and Wigan man Jean Beausejour, the newly-married Diogo endured a shuddering injury.

If you haven’t/don’t want to watch the clip, Diogo climbs a fence only for his wedding ring to catch on it as he climbs back down, causing the midfielder to lose part of his finger.

We can’t imagine that one was easy to explain to his wife.

And finally, it’s another goalie clanger. Why not? It’s Christmas.

Heading again to the depths of Italian football, and another penalty shootout.

Everyone thinks this latest spot-kick has smashed against the bar and gone out of play.

The penalty taker is devastated, and the goalkeeper is ecstatic.

But low and behold, behind the pair of them the ball returns from the sky, and makes a slow, bouncing beeline for the goal…

So now we know, if you do score or save a goal, just maybe make sure the ball is dead before you celebrate and look like a fool.

And if you have scored a legitimate goal, don’t annoy the referee, at all.
