POLL: Should the World Cup be expanded to 40 teams?

Published:

We don’t even know where the 2026 World Cup will be held (the Moon?) but it looks as though we could be seeing an extra eight nations take part in a new 40-team tournament.

FIFA have announced this week that they are considering expanding the tried and trusted 32-team set-up, amid a raft of changes from the world’s football committee following a series of public scandals.

This new format would add a week to what is already a month-long competition, and would likely feature an additional eight games with eight groups of five nations.

Next summer’s 2016 European Championships will feature 24 teams for the first time, an addition of eight to previous tournaments, and the impact has already been felt in a positive manner in a hotly-contested qualifying campaign.

A World Cup change would mean we may be looking at a 40-day tournament (Premier League bosses will be delighted…) but it would allow more nations from Africa and Asia to enter.

Europe currently claim 13 of the 32 spots available in the World Cup’s current guise – almost a third – and perhaps it is time to redress the balance somewhat.

So today’s poll is a simple yes/no, would an expanded World Cup be too big and too long with too many dull games?  Or would an expansion bring more life, more atmosphere and more balance to the competition?
