POLL: No fireworks for England at Euro 2016

Published:

England will negotiate Group B in France and progress through the Round of 16, but that’ll be it for Roy Hodgson’s men next summer, according to Ladbrokes News readers.

After the Euro 2016 draw this weekend, we wanted to know how far you think the Three Lions will go and it’s a traditionally unexciting run to the quarter-finals for Wayne Rooney and co in France.

England were drawn in a reasonably winnable group with Slovakia, Russia and a crunch game with old friends (enemies?) Wales.

It’s a group which could have equally been better or worse for England but in today’s poll 31 per cent of you say they’ll be reaching the last eight, something they’re 13/5 to achieve.

But England’s traditional failure to step it up a notch when it really matters is probably a large part of the reason why 19 per cent of you don’t even fancy the Euro ’96 semi-finalists to escape the group stage and find themselves on an early Eurostar back home.

Should that happen, anyone who backs the 11/2 on England to fail to get out of the group stage could at least enjoy a healthier Ladbrokes account.

The results from today’s poll are making it quite clear that optimism for an England run into the latter stages has yet to kick in, if it ever will.

Just under a fifth – 19 per cent – of you fancy Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy to score England into the semi-finals and repeat those heroics of 20 years ago, while 18 per cent of you say England will go all the way and win a first major tournament in 50 years, something Ladbrokes fancy is a 10/1 chance.
