Ladbrokes Premiership: Aberdeen take advantage of the weather

Storm Desmond made his presence felt across the UK this weekend, and the Ladbrokes Premiership certainly felt his impact with half of the six scheduled fixtures postponed after pitch inspections.

Games at Dundee, Kilmarnock and Ross County all managed to go ahead however, but it was Aberdeen and St Johnstone who arguably ended the weekend happiest.

Here’s your (somewhat depleted) weekend review…

Aberdeen closed the gap to Celtic to four points – albeit having played a game more – by seeing off Dundee 2-0 in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.

Niall McGinn put the Dons ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, before Adam Rooney doubled the advantage midway through the first half.

The win means Derek McInnes’ men have now claimed 10 points from their last 12 ahead of a crunch meeting with Hearts next weekend and their odds in the ‘Betting without Celtic’ market have shortened again from 4/9 to 1/4 following Saturday’s victory.

For Dundee, the result brought an end to a run of four straight 1-1 draws, and Paul Hartley’s side are now winless in seven games.

Both Kilmarnock and Dundee United will have mixed emotions following their 1-1 draw at Rugby Park.

Killie had one eye on a first win in five games after Kris Boyd put the hosts 1-0 up within five minutes of the referee’s whistle.

However Billy McKay equalised from the spot 20 minutes later after an incident which saw Stuart Findlay shown a straight red for Killie.

The hosts proved resolute for the remaining 65 minutes though, and while perhaps ruing not snatching all three points, United did end a three-game losing streak to narrow the gap to Motherwell.

The final match to go ahead took place in the Highlands as St Johnstone maintained their excellent form with a high-scoring win at Ross County.

David Wotherspoon’s brace had given Saints a 2-0 lead at half-time, but two County goals in six second-half minutes restored parity.

Having lost four of their last five Premiership games, the host’s hopes of a point were dashed when Dave Mackay grabbed his first goal of the season to net a St Johnstone winner in the dying moments.

Tommy Wright’s men are now comfortably fourth in the table – eight points ahead of Hamilton – and are unbeaten in six league games, claiming five victories in that spell.
