Darts’ world number one out to odds-against to win World C’ship

When Michael van Gerwen claimed the 2015 Grand Slam of Darts title over Phil Taylor it completed his set of winning every PDC major tournament at least once. Now, he wants to win them all again.
He’ll start his new goal at the 2016 World Darts Championship and, according to Ladbrokes’ betting, stands a superb chance of winning a second title at Alexandra Palace.
The bookmaker price him up at even-money to prevail in London over Christmas, but, for one day only, will be boosting their price on the Dutchman to 5/4 as part of their build up to the tournament.
Unsurprisingly, Van Gerwen will arrive at the World Championships as the top seed thanks to another display of dominance during the season and has been handed a relatively plum draw as a result.
Although compatriot Raymond van Barneveld or Premier League participant Stephen Bunting wait as possible third-round opponents, Van Gerwen will still be heavily fancied to progress past those two foes should he face them.
A potential quarter-final clash with Michael Smith looks far easier than that tricky third-round and once into the last four Mighty Mike will dial up his aggression as he looks to land the sport’s most coveted prize.
The 26-year-old has reached the last four in each of the last three World Championships and is a pretty safe bet to continue that run going in 2016. However, at boosted odds, it’s worth nabbing the world number one to go all the way.
