#CultClashes: Arsenal and Man City have some belters to live up to
Monday night’s fixture between Arsenal and Manchester City could turn into a scrap for the Christmas top spot should Leicester fail to win at Everton.
The two clubs are finely poised in the betting with the Gunners 13/10 shots with the Citizens slight underdogs at 19/10.
While the final fixture before we tuck into our turkey could be a perfect launch pad for a push for the Premier League trophy, there have been many other humdingers between the two clubs.
We pick out our top five in this week’s #CultClashes.
Arsenal 5-0 Manchester City – October 28 2000
There are few strike partnerships more revered than that of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp and the duo really demonstrated the fine craft they possessed at Highbury in our opening clash.
Ashley Cole started the party with a well worked free-kick just before half-time, but it wasn’t until after the break that things got really interesting as Bergkamp, Henry and Sylvain Wiltord got in on the act.
Manchester City 1-5 Arsenal – February 22 2003
Manchester City waved goodbye to the ‘Wembley of the North’, Maine Road 12 years ago, though they might want to forget one match of that farewell season.
Arsenal certainly marked their last visit in style, as five different players got on the scoresheet to give the likes of David Sommeil and Sun Jihai a torrid afternoon in a 5-1 victory.
Manchester City 4-2 Arsenal – September 12 2009
Memorable for one man more than anything else as Emmanuel Adebayor got his name in the papers for perhaps the wrong reason.
After throwing all he had at the Gunners, including his studs at Robin van Persie’s head, he netted the third goal in a 4-2 victory against his former club. What he did next riled the Arsenal fans somewhat…
Arsenal 0-2 Manchester City – January 13 2013
City’s trips to the capital hadn’t been an away day they looked forward to until this game, with the Citizens without a league win against the Gunners in north London since 1971.
They put that right with an unlikely source giving them the lead as James Milner blasted home a delicious through ball. Edin Dzeko doubled that lead less than 10 minutes later as City marched to take the three points.
Manchester City 6-3 Arsenal – December 14 2013
The joint highest scoring game of the 2012-13 season saw City come out on top in a nine-goal thriller, adding three points to the tally that would eventually see them crowned champions again.
Sergio Aguero gave them the lead inside 15 minutes before Alvaro Negredo, Fernandinho, David Silva and Yaya Toure, who had a season to remember, added to their bumper score-line.
