Why Swansea sacking Garry Monk is a nonsensical notion

Last month, when rumours first surfaced that Garry Monk’s job at Swansea City was under threat, based on the simplistic notion that the manager had missed training, the club’s Twitter account had a brilliant response.

Now as the volume on sack chatter has been cranked up, the social media gurus in south Wales are ominously quiet.
Monk has managed the unthinkable this week, surpassing the figure of misery that is Jose Mourinho to head Ladbrokes’ Next Manager to Leave market.
The Swans boss is now as short as 1/3 get the boot, but it feels like a false price considering the remarkable job he has done at the Liberty Stadium.
That Monk finds himself in a pinch form-wise cannot be denied. Swansea have won just one of their last eight games – against bottom club Aston Villa – and have scored just five goals in that time, but that isn’t a run of woe long enough to warrant his dismissal.
There is no threat of relegation this season – that’s still a lengthy 12/1 shot – and if Mourinho, whose Chelsea are two places below the Swans, can survive the chop from the most ruthless owner in Premier League history, then Huw Jenkins’ placid trigger finger should be a long way off twitching.
Last season’s result count for plenty too. In his first full season in management, let alone as Swansea boss, Monk rocketed the club to their highest Premier League finish, with a record points haul providing an extra-sweet icing on that cake.
Swansea aren’t in the business of sacking their managers either. Michael Laudrup is obviously the recent exception to that rule, but his demise was as much about the constant speculation on the Dane’s next move as it was a poor run of form.
At the time, Jenkins commented with pride that it was the first time Swansea had sacked a manager in 10 years and it’s highly unlikely the chairman will want to skew that statistic to oust a dedicated club man like Monk.
The former defender’s next assignment comes at home to Bournemouth after the international break and Ladbrokes make the Welsh club 17/20 to win.
