Why Everton need Capital One Cup win more than Liverpool

Published:

There is just one mile between their stadiums. Only one point separates them in the Premier League table and they can barely be parted in the betting to win the Capital One Cup.

The rivalry means Liverpool and Everton are used to being close together, but when the chance to win some silverware comes up this season one team definitely needs the League Cup trophy more than the other.

While it might be seen as the ideal start to Jurgen Klopp’s long and successful reign as the Reds manager, it is actually Roberto Martinez and the Toffees that need the triumph more.

The Goodison Park club haven’t won a trophy since 1995, when they lifted the FA Cup, and have generally had a longer period of anonymity than their local rivals. Liverpool’s own barren run in the silverware department is only four years old.

Despite a run at the top four in his first season, Martinez has not quite won the Toffees supporters over with his inconsistent results since, something which has been alien to Everton fans used to David Moyes guaranteeing a top-eight finish at the least.

At the fifth-round stage of the League Cup it is arguably the Blue half of Merseyside that stands the better chance of progression, although Ladbrokes make Liverpool a shorter price to win the whole thing.

Martinez’s men have an away game against high-flying Championship outfit Middlesbrough to negotiate, while Liverpool are on the road to Southampton.

Ladbrokes give Klopp’s side an 11/2 chance to claim the Capital One Cup this term, while Everton cling to their coattails at 7/1.

In their respective fifth-round ties, both rivals are priced up at 7/5 to beat their opponents, with just a two-legged semi final and a trip to Wembley standing in the way of a celebration with the trophy.
