Smith v Fielding: How close is fight that’s splitting Liverpool?

Published:

Two unbeaten records will be put on the line at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, but with a pair of local boys facing off against each other, the crowd could be forgiven for not knowing where to look.

In one corner, 25-year-old Callum Smith, who boasts a record of 17 wins from 17 fights, 12 of them by way of knockout, will hope to become the fourth brother from his household to win a British title, with Ladbrokes going top price at 2/7 about such an outcome.

Opposite him awaits fellow Liverpudlian Rocky Fielding, who at 28 has 21 wins from 21 fights to his name, with the same number of KOs as Smith among that haul.

The boxing fraternity largely see Smith as the likely victor, with Jamie Moore, Carl Froch and Carl Frampton all tipping the younger man to win on points, priced at 13/8 with Ladbrokes, in their pre-fight predictions.

James DeGale, Johnny Nelson, Paul Smith and Scott Quigg also plump for the man they call ‘Mundo’ within boxing circles, although fellow middleweight Martin Murray stuck up for his pal Fielding, saying:

It’s a tough fight and full credit to them for taking it. They could have easily avoided each other and gone down different paths but they are putting their unbeaten records on the line and that’s brilliant. I think it’ll be a hard 12-round fight, I don’t think it will be one-way traffic at all, they will both have spells of success in there.

I know that when it comes to tough fights, Rocky raises his game, and I think he will raise his game on Saturday. I know the Smith family well and they are all top lads. I’ll be ringside on the night and I will be nervous for Rocky, but I am confident he can do the job.

Fielding can be backed at 11/4 in the outrights, and 11/1 to win on points.
