Salford City might just give Notts County an FA Cup scare

Published:

The FA Cup First Round gets underway this evening and for Salford City it represents a pretty big moment in the history of the club.

When the Mancunian club takes to the turf at Moor Lane against Notts County, it will be the first time the side compete in the FA Cup proper.

Now unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 18 months or so, you’ll be plenty aware of Salford’s famous owners.

A certain five-some involving Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Gary and Phil Neville took over the club ahead of the 2014-15 season and the new consortium has seen the club receive unheralded amounts of publicity and even a feature documentary on the BBC.

Following promotion to the Northern League Premier this season, a win tonight would only continue the club’s rise while sending a packed Moor Lane into raptures, but odds on a Salford win of 10/3 are a reminder of the size of the task ahead.

Opponents Notts County have literally been there and done it all in the domestic game as the world’s oldest club, and they’re 8/11 favourites to avoid a banana skin at the first attempt.

If you fancy them to get the job done, albeit with a scare, Ladbrokes are boosting Notts County to win and both teams to score from 2/1 to 11/4.

A draw is 11/4, but this is the FA Cup and is a place where magic so often happens.

County are on an excellent little run, going unbeaten in four games, but they’ve failed to progress beyond the first round for each of the past two seasons.

What County have on their side is recent experience of being underdogs.

The Nottingham club forced Liverpool into extra-time in a League Cup clash two seasons ago, and saw off Premier League Wigan in 2010 and Sunderland a year later before pushing Man City to a replay.

A home win would get the FA Cup off to a headline-grabbing start, but comments from County this week in the press have made it clear they are taking Salford very seriously despite the three-league gap between the teams.

It’s sure to be a thrilling atmosphere at Moor Lane in front of the BBC cameras, but can the Class of ’92 inspire a Class of ’15?
