Potential Adebayor move to Watford looking realistic

Published:

The Emmanuel Adebayor to Watford rumour has been picking up a lot of steam in the past month, despite many suggesting he wouldn’t be a good fit.

Aston Villa seemed to be the likely destination for the Togo man, but Tim Sherwood’s departure from Villa Park put an end to a potential reunion for the former Tottenham Hotspur pair.

Quique Sanchez Flores added fuel to the speculation of the move by talking about the possibility of a deal for the 31-year-old.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, the Watford boss said: “I know Adebayor. I know him very well.

“I love players with character, with talent, with hunger and soul.

“So if he is in this case, he would be perfect – but no names at this moment.”

Obviously, Odion Ighalo has been one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League this season so dropping him wouldn’t make any sense.

Similarly, Troy Deeney is Mr Watford and the club captain is, rightfully, loved at Vicarage Road meaning Adebayor won’t get a starting position.

However, despite this he could be a vital as an impact sub and would add some Premier League experience to the side.

The former Spurs, Manchester City and Arsenal man has made 225 top flight appearances, 204 more than all of Watford’s strikers put together.

Adebayor’s last real spell in the Spurs first team produced 11 goals in 21 games, finding the net at a rate better than a goal every other game.

In total, he has scored 96 top-tier goals, contributing to a total of 176 in all competitions throughout his career and despite some misgivings many people might have, you cannot scoff at those statistics.

Furthermore, the fact that the Hornets would be able to bring in such a seasoned player without the need for a transfer fee only sweetens the deal.
