No goalkeeper comes close to the class of Gianluigi Buffon

When it comes to ranking the best goalkeepers in recent history, no one comes close to Gianluigi Buffon, or so say Ladbrokes News readers.

On the day that ‘Gigi’ celebrates two decades since making his debut for Parma, we asked you to tell us who was the best man to don the goalie gloves in the following period.

And it was the Italian legend himself that came out on top, picking up 50 per cent of the vote at the expense of his five rivals.

When those rivals have won seven Champions League winner’s medals between them, it goes to show the high regard Buffon is held in.

It’s easy to see why the Juventus stopper is so revered having lifted the World Cup with his country as well as a UEFA Cup and six Scudetto titles.

But also for moments like these….

Chasing him in second came former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel, who caught 28 per cent of the vote.

Behind him were Spaniard Iker Casillas and German World Cup winner Manuel Neuer with 11 and four per cent of the poll going their way respectively.

Spare a thought for Edwin van der Sar.

Despite making 130 appearances for Holland, and winning four Premier League titles at Old Trafford, the Dutchman failed to attract a single vote.

Harsh? Possibly, but when he was up against some legends between the sticks, competition was always going to be fierce.
