Ladbrokes League 2: Montrose’s dynamic duo on target again
The rise of Montrose continues unabated and once again the lethal pairing of Gary Fraser and Graham Webster were instrumental in The Gable Endies’ march up the Ladbrokes League 2 table.
For a side who narrowly avoided the drop last term their turnaround in fortunes in 2015-16 has been nothing short of remarkable with Fraser and Webster the cornerstone of their recent success.
Here’s our round-up of the weekend’s action…
Montrose are now second in Ladbrokes League 2 following a 4-1 thumping of Berwick Rangers. That defeat has cost player-manager Colin Cameron his job and leaves The Wee Gers anxiously looking over their shoulders.
Fraser’s penalty opened the scoring before Ross Campbell made it 2-0. Finn Graham pulled one back for Berwick but that goal only served to re-energise the hosts.
Webster made it three before Fraser’s headed effort added the gloss.
Incredibly, Fraser and Webster have now netted 15 of Montrose’s 19 goals so far this season and the former is the highest scorer in the division with eight strikes. Ladbrokes make him the 3/1 favourite to be the top League 2 marksman.
Annan Athletic won’t be losing any sleep about their nearest rivals’ form though. They secured a 1-0 win away at East Fife with Peter Weatherson’s goal putting them five points clear at the top.
However, the veteran striker soon turned from hero to villain when receiving his marching orders five minutes before half-time for violent conduct off the ball.
Elgin City drew level with the Fifers on 17 points following their 2-0 success over Arbroath. Craig Gunn and Brian Cameron scored either side of the break to hand Jim Weir’s side their first win in five outings.
Meanwhile, the spoils were shared in the division’s two remaining fixtures.
The Stirlingshire derby finished goalless with neither Stirling Albion nor East Stirling able to break through.
Both goalkeepers made fine saves to protect a point for the bottom two clubs while Albion had Ross Smith sent-off in stoppage time.
And finally, Barry Ferguson’s Clyde were forced to settle for their third draw in five league games following a 1-1 stalemate against Queen’s Park.
Sean Higgins had given Ferguson’s outfit a first-half lead at Hampden but John Carter equalised for the Spiders who arguably should’ve gone on to win the game.
