Kamara: Gerrard’s return to Liverpool shouldn’t have taken this long

Published:

This week saw the possible return of Steven Gerrard to Liverpool, and for me any sort of return for the former captain would be an excellent move.

It looks as if it will be in an off-field capacity and his playing days at Anfield are over, but I cannot believe Brendan Rodgers didn’t add him to his backroom staff in the summer.

I’m sure Gerrard wouldn’t have gone to America if Brendan had said he wanted him to join him on his coaching team.

He changed his support staff around in the summer and that would have been an ideal time to give Gerrard a job in that sort of role. But it didn’t happen then, and now Jurgen Klopp’s the man who looks like he is going to benefit.

He’s obviously got a contract with LA Galaxy now and it will be a wait for him to return to Anfield in any full-time role, but it is surely only a matter of time.

I did see Klopp’s quotes in the press recently saying at this moment in time there is nothing there for Steven, but when he’s finished playing in America they will be first club to offer him a job.

He’s 10/1 to be the next Liverpool manager and frankly whether you think that is a good price depends on how long you want to wait for your money.

Jurgen Klopp isn’t going to be there for two minutes. He will be given a minimum of two years to sort things out in my opinion, possibly three.

So even if Gerrard is the next man to get the gig in front of Kop, it’s likely to be a hefty wait to collect those winnings.

For that reason, even if he was 100/1 you would still have a fairly long wait to get your money, but for what it’s worth 10/1 might be a little skinny for me to be getting involved in.
