Chelsea revisiting prospect of signing Man United skipper

It may be a slightly tenuous link, but the morning gossip columns imply that Jose Mourinho’s soft spot for Wayne Rooney still simmers, as Chelsea are touted as favourites to sign Manchester United’s captain next summer.
With Rooney away on England duty, the Metro place the struggling Blues at the head of a list of clubs containing former employers Everton and Paris Saint-Germain among others.
It would not be the first time the 30-year-old striker has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge over the years either, giving the theory more than a shred of credibility.
When Mourinho resigned for Chelsea in the summer of 2013, his comments about Rooney intensified speculation that the Portuguese tactician would make a bid, although one never materialised, apparently out of respect for United’s property.
At the time the returning Chelsea boss said: “He (Rooney) is a player I like very much but I can say no more than that. Being fast and direct, I like that, but he’s a Manchester United player.”
A few years down the line and the ground seems far more fertile at both clubs over a prospective move at the end of the season.
Chelsea’s current striking triumvirate has been exposed as too weak to compete. Diego Costa has failed to reach anything like the heights of last season alongside monumental Premier League flop Radamel Falcao and the rarely seen Loic Remy.
Meanwhile, despite top scoring for United this season, a return of just two Premier League goals has seen Rooney subjected to plenty of criticism, with plenty of fans wishing to see him replaced as the main striker by teenage talent Anthony Martial.
If such levels of scrutiny continue to be aimed his way from around the club, Rooney may just be tempted into a change of scene after spending more than a decade at Old Trafford.
