Celtic enter the race to sign the new Marek Hamsik
Ladbrokes Premiership champions Celtic have joined the race to sign Slovakian teen sensation Matus Bero, according to reports.
The 20-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Slovakian Super Liga outfit Trencin, has started the season in emphatic form, hitting nine goals in 15 games to earn comparisons to countryman and Napoli ace Marek Hamsik.
Reports in the Scottish Sun suggest that Bhoys manager Ronny Deila is looking to add to his midfield when the January transfer window opens and has sent scouts to run the rule over Bero.
The Hoops boss will have to act quickly, however, with clubs from the English Premier League and Italy’s Serie A also thought to be interested.
Trencin general manager Robert Rybnicek seems resigned to losing his prized asset but claims when he does leave it will be for a big fee.
“Recently, we have had Arsenal, Liverpool and AC Milan, which is unbelievable for Slovakia. There is a lot of noise about Matus. He has been excellent for a long time and is one of the valuable players in Slovakia,” he told the newspaper.
“He’s not just worth a lot on the pitch. He has a great nature and it comes across in his performances. When Matus does leave here, it will be one of the biggest transfers in Slovakian history. He will have several alternatives.”
Next up for Celtic is the visit of Kilmarnock for which the Bhoys are priced up as 1/10 favourites.
The league leaders are now 1/100 to retain Ladbrokes Premiership crown but with performances in Europe not meeting Deila’s expectations at times this season Bero could be the man to bring about improvement on the continent.
