Bayern v Barca: Choosing which ‘b’ehemoth to back for Euro glory

Published:

With 30 of 32 teams in with at least a shout of reaching the last 16 of this season’s Champions League, labelling the competition as a two-horse race may come across a smidgen naive. Then again, it is the might of Bayern Munich and Barcelona we’re talking about.

Between them, these clubs account for the identity of four of the last 10 final participants and three of the last five winners.

In the red corner are Bayern, managed by two-time Champions League-winning manager Pep Guardiola, German juggernauts Bayern are the 11/4 favourites with Ladbrokes, having just turned Arsenal into Euro roadkill at the Allianz Arena.

Although they had succumbed 2-0 in a game that swung both ways at the Emirates, that 5-1 trouncing of the Gunners sent out a statement of intent which will have reverberated around the continent on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, in the blue-ish corner Guardiola’s old boys Barca are also cranking ominously into gear after recovering from a possible treble hangover early in the season.

Boasting the holy striking trinity of Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi which blasted them to European glory last season, Luis Enrique’s defending champs are next in the betting at 3/1 – looking to finally break the holders’ hoodoo.

Real Madrid are sure to have something to say on the matter at 5/1, especially boasting the meanest defence in the tournament under Rafael Benitez, but with five of a very modest tally of seven goals provided by Cristiano Ronaldo, an injury to CR7 could wreak havoc for Los Blancos.
