POLL: Wayne Rooney’s days as a striker are numbered

Published:

After hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons last night by missing his spot-kick in Manchester United’s League Cup exit to Middlesbrough, it’s time for Wayne Rooney to drop back and take up a place in midfield.

That’s the view of the voters in today’s Ladbrokes News poll, who say Rooney’s days as a striker are over at Old Trafford.

Barcelona legend Xavi recently called for the 30-year-old to drop back into midfield in order to prolong his playing career, with the United skipper netting just three times in his last 18 domestic outings.

“Personally I think Rooney still has much to offer, but maybe it’s time for him to adapt,” the 35-year-old said.

“If he can adapt, there’s no reason why he can’t play at the top level for another five or six seasons. But as a player you must admit to yourself your body is changing and can’t do what it used to be able to do.”

With Anthony Martial quickly becoming a fan favourite at Old Trafford, a huge 88 per cent of you have said it’s time for Rooney to adjust to his new phase of his career and drop back into a midfield role.

But there’s still a few of you out there who still believe England’s record goalscorer can still do the job up top. 12 per cent of you voted no, seemingly agreeing with Louis van Gaal that Rooney is still a threat up front.
