Villa trip the perfect time for Monk to end Swansea rut

Published:

Monday night’s 1-0 home loss to Stoke may have added one or two grey hairs for Garry Monk but he’s got every chance this weekend of turning it all around.

The Swans boss has seen a strong start to the year – claiming eight points from an opening 12 – fade into a winless six-game run.

Bojan’s penalty on Monday evening has left the Welsh club sitting in 14th place, but if they claim a win this weekend they could rise well inside the top 10, so things are not as bad as they may seem at the Liberty Stadium.

Monk takes his side to Villa Park this weekend, and recent history suggests Aston Villa are opponents Swansea really enjoy facing.

The Swans won both meetings 1-0 last season, and are unbeaten against the Villans in the last five meetings.

Since Swansea entered the Premier League in fact, in 2011, Villa have won just one of the eight meetings between the teams, while the Welshmen have claimed four victories.

If Monk has been losing sleep over his side’s recent struggles, it won’t be anything compared to his Villa Park counterpart.

Tim Sherwood’s team are enduring an eight-game winless stretch in which they’ve lost each of their last five games.

A 1-0 win away at Premier League rookies Bournemouth has been Villa’s only success thus far, and they currently sit second bottom in the table.

Swansea are 6/4 to win at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, a place where the hosts have failed to score in three of four fixtures this term.

Three of the Midland side’s home defeats have come in the form of a 1-0 scoreline, and a repeat victory for the visitors can be backed at 6/1.

The Swans face Norwich and Bournemouth in quick succession next month, and this weekend’s game could be the start of a notable turnaround for the club.
