RWC: Value lies with France in Pool D decider against Ireland

Published:

Locked on 14 points apiece, Ireland take on France in a straight shoot-out to determine who progresses to the Rugby World Cup quarter finals as Pool D winners.

Ladbrokes understandably make Six Nations champions Ireland slight favourites for the Millennium Stadium clash, priced up at 4/5.

France are the 5/4 underdogs, but Philippe Saint-Andre’s side are on a roll and look good value to consign the Irish to a most unenviable last-eight clash against world champions New Zealand.

Ireland are unbeaten against the French in four matches, winning the last two Six Nations encounters and drawing twice before that.

However, Joe Schmidt’s side have suffered a big injury set-back ahead of this crunch encounter, were well shy of their best in victory over Italy last time out and when it comes to World Cups, Les Bleus certainly have an historical edge.

While Ireland have famously never gone further than the quarters, their opponents on Sunday are veterans of the latter stages, finishing as runners-up on three separate occasions and are contrastingly renowned for exceeding expectations.

Centre Jared Payne has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament which in the words of his skipper Paul O’Connell is “a big loss” for his side, especially in an area of the pitch where France are blessed with power and flair in abundance.

Young Connaught back Robbie Henshaw and partner Keith Earls are up against the brute force of Matheiu Bastareud and the weaving Wesley Fofana in a key midfield battle now tipped in France’s favour.

With thee tries to his name though, Munster centre Earls is a great shout at 14/1 to be the first tryscorer in the match at 14/1.
