POLL: Which of these is the oddest sporting animal incident?

Published:

Sunday’s MotoGP event at Phillip Island may have produced one of the finest races in a generation, but it will also forever be remembered as the race where a rider headbutted a seagull.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a little list of six memorable animal moments at sporting events and we’re asking you to vote for your favourite.

From dressed up chickens, to runaway pigs and dogs causing chaos, animals seemingly love a sporting occasion as much as we do.

MotoGP – Unfortunate Seagull

MotoGP’s annual venture to Phillip Island is always fraught with seagulls and rarely a year goes by without some sort of incident.

This year was no different. Early race leader Andrea Iannone was not only trying to ride a Ducati at up to 200mph, he was also eyeing up a seagull as it flew towards him. The Italian was forced to take action…

We can’t confirm the current state of the poor bird, but it didn’t look good.

Football – Blackburn Chicken

As protests at your club owners go, this one was equal parts amusing and ridiculous.

How a Blackburn fan got a fully-grown chicken into Ewood Park remains a mystery, but the Rovers fan – unhappy as bosses Venky’s, was successful and let the chicken roam onto the pitch draped Rovers attire.

After running away from Wigan keeper Ali Al Habsi, and Rovers striker Yakubu – who wouldn’t? – the farmyard favourite was eventually apprehended, and probably given a lifetime ban at Ewood.

For the record, Venky’s are still the owners of Blackburn Rovers.

Baseball – Runaway Pig

We know Baseball isn’t always the most exhilarating sport to watch, and someone in Mexico clearly thought so at a game in 2006.

Someone’s pig made its way onto the pitch, and what ensued was a comical chase which should only be played to the Benny Hill theme.

With the speed and agility he showed evading chicken after chicken, we fancy the pig could have had quite a career in the MLB.

Tour de France – Rogue Chiens

With all those open roads, you can take your pick from dog incidents at the Le Grand Tour over the years.

We’re going with this moment from 2007 involving a very nonchalant golden retriever and German rider Marcus Burghardt.

In short, the dog walks into the road, wipes out Burghardt. Gets up and walks off without a shred of remorse.

Football – Anfield Cat

With Jurgen Klopp’s debut as Liverpool boss pitching him against Tottenham, it’s only right we revisit this baffling incident from a clash between the teams in 2012.

Early on in the Premier League contest, Luka Modric plays a long ball out wide as everyone’s attention turns to a four-legged feline sprinting across the Anfield pitch quicker than Andy Carroll ever could.

After legging it right across the turf, the cat selflessly headed to the touchline to find assistance and allow play to continue, though it proved to be the highlight in a drab 0-0.

While Saturday’s 0-0 had its moments, another feline interruption would have added a bit of welcome excitement.

Football – Jimmy Greaves versus the Dog

Even the World Cup isn’t exempt from a four-legged visitor.

Arguably the original animal sporting invasion, a 1962 clash between Brazil and England is interrupted when a dog stays on to the pitch.

Play continues for a while before Greaves gets down on all fours and scoops up the little tyke.  England lost the game 3-1.

Brazil legend Garrincha found the incident so funny he later adopted the pooch.
