Poll: Is the Ballon D’Or 2015 a two-horse race once again?

The shortlist for the Ballon D’Or was announced today, and rather than just include Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, FIFA saw fit to include 21 others in the chase for the prize.

Five players who currently call the Premier League their home make the cut with Manchester City stars Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Yaya Toure joined by Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard.

However with Aguero the shortest priced runner of that quintet at 66/1, it looks as if the award will be heading to the continent once again.

The duo of Messi and Ronaldo have finished first and second in the pursuit of the individual accolade in six of the last seven seasons, the latter claiming victory for the last two years.

However odds of 1/5 on the Barcelona magician suggest a fifth success is on the cards at the expense of the 5/1 second favourite.

The Argentinean started this season as he finished last, scoring six goals in 10 games to continue the form of 2014-15 in which he netted 58 times in 57 appearances.

Ronaldo has an even greater record so far in this new season. He may have taken three matches to find the back of the net, but since then he has been on fire.

Two hat-tricks for the Real Madrid means his haul this term reads 11 matches played, 10 goals scored.

But what of the British chances of being named the best player in the world for 2015?

Well, frankly, there’s not a lot of hope, with Gareth Bale the only man from these shores making the shortlist.

The Welsh wizard has been priced up at 100/1 after a stop-start first full calendar year in Madrid.
