‘New Paul Pogba’ is already at Manchester United

Allowing Paul Pogba to leave Old Trafford may rank as one of the biggest regrets of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United reign but fortunately for Red Devils fans a replacement may already be waiting in the wings.

The Guardian have recently been profiling the 50 best young players in Europe and United’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah was among those to make the list.

The 17-year-old former Ajax youth star signed for United in 2014 for £300,000 and has since shone in both defence and midfield for the youth side.

Comparisons with Pogba may be on the lazy side, with the player’s appearance and frame offering a closer resemblance than his playing style, but according to the report United have a future star on their hands.

“In truth, the two are rather different: Fosu-Mensah has played most of his football in central defence, his strength and passing range standing out in youth football, although he has also appeared in midfield and his future may lie there,” The Guardian explained.

“The Holland Under-17 captain has moved up to United’s Under-21 team this season and is earmarked for a quick progression to first-team contention.”

The United man was one of just three Premier League-based players to make the list, with Arsenal’s Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Krystian Bielik also making the grade.

United allowed Pogba to leave for free after opting to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement instead of offering the Frenchman more game time.

With the Juventus star now valued at around £70m it is clear Sir Alex made a blunder but if Fosu-Mensah goes on to become half the player at Old Trafford it could soften the blow somewhat.
