Ladbrokes League 2: Berwick and Elgin to lead home wins theme

Published:

With just two points separating the top five, life in Ladbrokes League 2 is proving to be extremely competitive in the SPFL. Two of those teams, Elgin and Clyde meet in a game which could see either side top the table come 5pm on Saturday.

Elsewhere East Stirling look to end their struggling fortunes when they head to similarly out-of-sorts Berwick and in-form Arbroath seek a fourth-straight win over third-placed Annan.

Here’s your weekly preview…

Arbroath v Annan

After a winless opening five games to the season, Arbroath have turned a corner.

Three wins on the spin has put them just five points off top spot and they host an Annan side which lost the league leadership last weekend.

The Smokies have won their last three games to nil, but Annan have found the net in every game this term, and did likewise in both trips to Gayfield Park last season.

Best Bet: Both teams to score @ 4/7

Berwick v East Stirling

Having lost their last five games, East Stirling would perhaps want to avoid this trip to Berwick, where they’ve endured tough times in the past.

The Shire – defeated 4-0 by Arbroath last weekend – have netted in all bar two league fixtures, but they haven’t scored in any of their last six visits to the Borderers, who have won to nil on each occasion.

The hosts haven’t won any of their last three games, but Colin Cameron’s side have lost just once at home this term and should have a better time of it here with their opponents conceding 17 times in their last five games.

Best Bet: Berwick to win to nil @ 9/4

East Fife v Stirling Albion

East Fife top the table courtesy of the league’s meanest defence with just six goals conceded and put Montrose aside 4-1 last time out.

That defence comes up against League 2’s weakest attack, with Stirling netting just seven times this term.

The Binos’ two wins this season have come against bottom club East Stirling and at home to Montrose who are pointless away.

The hosts however have lost only twice at Bayview in 2015 and have seen their defence breached on home soil just twice this season.

Best Bet: East Fife -1 @ 17/10

Elgin v Clyde

Though both Elgin and Clyde could go top of the table this weekend, inconsistency has blighted their campaigns.

The pair have claimed four points each from the last three games, and picked up 1-1 draws last weekend.

The Bully Wee haven’t won any of their last seven visits to Borough Briggs however, with Elgin winning the last five meetings, including last year’s two contests to nil.

To add further concern to Barry Ferguson’s men, they’ve scored just twice on the road this season, while Jim Weir’s Elgin have won all three contests at home, netting nine times.

Best Bet: Elgin to win @ 7/5

Queen’s Park v Montrose

Having won three games in succession, Queen’s Park are in excellent form.

It’s the sort of form Montrose would relish right now, especially away from home.

Having taken a 4-1 hammering at Links Park to East Fife last weekend, the Gable Endies hit the road again still searching a first away point of the campaign.

Queen’s credentials at Hampden Park are further boosted having won their last two home games 5-1 and 3-1.

Best Bet: Queen’s Park -1 @ 37/20
