Lack of depth will scupper Arsenal’s title bid

Published:

They may have briefly topped the table last weekend but Arsenal will ultimately be left wanting in their bid to win the Premier League this season.

That is according to the latest  poll from Ladbrokes News, which showed that more people think the Gunners’ title bid is doomed to failure than think Arsene Wenger can finally deliver another league crown.

The poll came in the light of the north Londoners’ unexpected Capital One Cup exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday.

While cup upsets are nothing new, the manner with which a strong Arsenal side was dispatched with ease by the Owls, who ran out worthy 3-0 winners at Hillsborough, means there is cause for concern for Arsenal fans.

A total of 56 per cent of voters claim Wenger’s squad does not have the strength in depth to mount a serious title bid.

In years past Wenger has used the League Cup as an opportunity to blood a series of youngsters alongside some experienced heads, but last night’s team selection hints that the Frenchman no longer has the young talent required to compete at his disposal.

However, while more than half of those asked said the Emirates will go another year without seeing the Premier League trophy a healthy 44 per cent voted ‘Yes’ indicating there are plenty of people who support the theory that the Gunners’ 12-year wait for a league title could well end in May.
