How Twitter reacted to Wales’ heroic Euro 2016 qualification
Published:Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Chris Coleman and the whole of Wales were celebrating wildly upon the final whistle, as if they’d just won the World Cup.
They’d actually just lost a game, to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their penultimate Euro 2016 qualifier, but results elsewhere meant the Dragons were heading to a major tournament for the first time since 1958. This must be what winning the World Cup feels like.
Matching the celebrations on the Bilino Polje pitch, where the Klinsmann dive and the birthday bumps were favourites, Twitter and the rest of social media revelled in the achievement of Coleman’s men.
Here’s the best of that reaction:
As you’d expect from the most expensive player in the world, Gareth Bale was key to the country’s qualification. He didn’t mind losing on the night:

Before their 2-0 defeat, Wales had shipped just twice in qualifying, helping them seal their place in France early:
Forget tonight. Qualifying lasts 10 games. Outstanding achievement by Wales. Thrilled for my many pals who suffered the dark days

It will be the first time Wales have ever appeared at the European Championships:

Amid the hysteria, the side still found time to tip their hat to the man that started it all:

But the moment Coleman and his players found out about Cyprus’ 2-1 win over Israel made for the best TV of the night:
